Inner Sunset and Strybing Arboretum

Beyond the commercial areas of The City such
as the Financial District and Union Square, San Francisco seems to consist of a set of
small towns brought together. While referred to as neighborhoods, these small
towns of San Francisco have their own thriving business districts and distinctive natures.
One such small town is called The Inner Sunset. It is over three miles west of the Financial District, out in the region referred to as The Avenues, for the north-south trafficways are numbered avenues, like 9th Avenue. The business area of The Inner Sunset is from Judah to Lincoln, from around 6th Avenue to 10th Avenue. Most of the businesses in the area are small, family-owned shops and restaurants. If you lived there, very soon the owners and help would get to know you and you would know them. It is a comfortable area to stroll and shop, with the added bonuses of several good restaurants and proximity to Strybing Arboretum and two museums in Golden Gate Park. 'The Sunset' was a promotional name conjured up by real estate developers decades ago. (There is 'The Outer Sunset' in addition to 'The Inner Sunset.') Considering the weather in this area, though, a more appropriate name would have been 'The Fogset.' While the sun could be beaming down on the Financial District and the Mission, it could be grey, chilly and often breezy farther west out in 'The Avenues.' (A sweater is definitely appropriate attire for June through August, sometimes referred to as 'Summer.')
