Loss on Columbus Avenue On October 18, 1999, a North Beach landmark was knocked over and smashed by a backing delivery truck. An area resident said the clock shattered "into a million bits.". Touch this line to see the clock as it was before October 18 Made by the Seth Thomas Clock Company in 1906, the clock stood in front
of the R. Matteucci & Co. jewelry store and came to be known as the Matteucci Clock.
The owner of the jewelry store and the clock died two days after his beloved clock
was wrecked. Dying of cancer, he was not told what had happened. In 1959
the clock had stopped for nearly a week when its first owner passed away, then
mysteriously began running again. |
| "It was a symbol of an earlier North Beach," said the executive director of the North Beach Chamber of Commerce. "The clock was elegant and noble." |
