oth trunks are made of red oak. The hipped or arched-style tops were used 350 years ago. The decorated one has hand-carved panels of poplar that are also painted. The top of that trunk, along with its four corners, is covered in leather hardened with baked-in bees wax. Translated into English, the phrase on the back is: "Honor, to whom honor is due." The plainer one (below, right) is just that: plain - but attractive in its simplicity. Both are high enough (and strong enough) to be used for seating if desired.. The construction and hardware are sufficiently sturdy to take a weight of clothes and other kit inside. When not 'campaigning,' both serve as storage.
