Moving 17th Century Soldiers

Doubling Ranks to the Right

"Ranks to the right double!"

This doubles the number of positions in half the ranks. Initially here, the first rank, like all the others, consists of six stalwart soldiers. The officer wishes to enlarge the frontage by increasing the numbers in that rank to 12 - by doubling. The increase is provided by inserting the second rank into the first (and the fourth rank into the third, and so on, even-numbered ranks stepping forward into the odd numbered).
